E-waste Management
Electronic waste, popularly known as 'e-waste' is electronic equipments products connects with power plug, batteries which have become obsolete due to advancement in technology, changes in fashion, style and status or nearing the end of their useful life.

The Indian Scenario
In India, there is an estimate that the total computers & other electronic and electrical goods originating from government offices, business houses, industries and household is of the order of 2 million tons per year. Manufacturer and assembler in a single calendar year, estimated to produce around 1200 tons of electronic scrap.

Biggest source of PC scraps being foreign countries that export huge electronic waste in the form of reusable components in India. India as a developing country needs simpler, low cost technology keeping in view of maximum resource recovery in environmental friendly methodologies Formal legislation yet not been formed by Indian Government to counter this toxic problem.

Guidelines for e-waste in India:
  • A collective collection system (PRO Producer Responsibility Organization) be set up in each city. Such a PRO will have industry participation as well as participation from existing informal sector collectors, as well as other stakeholders.

  • The PRO should have tie-ups with recycling units which are either existing or are new which ensure that e-waste is properly channelised.

  • The system will be that the PRO collects the material in association with the municipality and existing ianformal sector, channelise this to a dismantling unit and further diverts separate components to appropriate designated recyclers.

  • Such recycling units should have mandated ESM procedures. We believe that such an arrangement will ensure that e-waste is properly channelised to the appropriate recycling units

KRL’s Approach

  • Setting up of an integrated facility for recycling of e-waste under pollution norms.

  • Look forward for a possible tie-up for supply of technology and knowhow from a renowned WEEE Recyclers around the globe.

  • Associations with NGO’s , Government and Environmental organizations for creating awareness of increasing threat of e-waste in India.

  • Long term contracts with Electrical and Electronic manufacturers, users and disposers to setup an efficient collection centre helping them implement in their extended producers/user responsibilities.
